Special relationship between UK and US is over, MPs say

The UK government needs to be "less deferential" towards the US and more willing to say no to Washington, a group of MPs have said. The Commons Foreign Affairs committee also said it was wrong to speak of "the special relationship" with the US, as it was fostering other alliances. Angry families visit site of sunken South Korean ship

BAENGNYEONG ISLAND (AP) – Weeping, angry relatives of 46 crew members missing after a mysterious explosion sank a South Korean navy ship sailed around the site Sunday as rescue teams struggled to search for survivors. None has been found since an initial rescue of 58 sailors from the 1,200-ton Cheonan that sank early Saturday near the tense border with North Korea. No bodies have been discovered either. China flooding 'traps 123 miners'

At least 123 coal miners are trapped after a pit flooded in China's northern Shanxi province, state media says. Some 261 people were in the mine when water rushed in and 138 managed to escape, the Xinhua news agency reports. Belgium offers chickens to waste-cutting households

Residents of a Belgian town are to be offered chickens as part of a campaign to reduce household waste. The town of Mouscron has 50 pairs of chickens that it will distribute to families with sufficient space to keep the birds in their gardens. 1 killed, 2 wounded in Indian submarine fire

MUMBAI, (Xinhua) -- An Indian navy's sailor was killed and two others were wounded in a submarine fire broken out in an eastern port base of India yesterday, police said. The fire occurred at a naval dockyard in the eastern Indian port of Visakhapatnam, claiming a 24-year-old sailor's life and making tow others suffered from burn injuries, said the local police. Tsunami alert as a quake strikes off Japan

A tsunami alert has been issued in Japan after a powerful earthquake struck near the Okinawan coast. The Japan Meteorological Agency gave the strength as 6.9 while the US Geological Survey put it at 7.3. It struck at 0531 (2031 GMT), 84km (52 miles) east of Naha, on the island of Okinawa, 29km (18 miles) below the seabed, Reuters news agency reports. Full Article» |

Russian capital Moscow covered by record 63cm snowfall

Thousands of snow-clearing machines have been
working to dig the Russian capital Moscow out of a record-breaking fall
of 63cm (nearly 25 inches). After a weekend of heavy snow
showers, the regional weather centre announced that the previous record
of 62cm, set in 1966, had been broken. Snow ploughs were due to make three clean sweeps of the city on Monday. Drivers were asked to leave their cars at home but rail services are said to have been unaffected by the weather.

UN calls for 'more ambitious action' to cut greenhouse gas emission

BALI (Xinhua) – The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)
said Tuesday that countries will have to be far more ambitious in
cutting greenhouse gas emission if the world is to effectively curb a
rise in global temperature at 2 degrees Celsius or less. In its Year Book 2010 released on the sidelines of the 11th Global
Ministerial Environment Forum and the Chemical Ministerial Convention
at Nusa Dua of Bali province, the UNEP said that annual global
greenhouse gas emissions should not be more than 40 to 48.3 Giga tons
(GT) of equivalent CO2 in 2020 and should peak sometime between 2015
and 2021.

Kevin Rudd says Australia faces major terror threat

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has warned
that his country is now under a permanent and increased threat of
militant attack. He also announced plans to fingerprint and face-scan visitors from 10 high-risk countries. Mr Rudd said there was a growing threat from Islamist radicals born or raised in Australia. Last week, five Australians of foreign origin received heavy sentences for conspiring to launch a jihadist attack.
