BJMP adopts dance therapy for inmates

MANILA, Philippines - Inspired by the popularity of the dancing inmates of Cebu, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) is adopting the concept, which it believes would be a good therapy for inmates and prevent trouble in jails. Caloocan has early start in drive against measles

CALOOCAN CITY health officials are now strictly monitoring the cases of measles in the city to prevent an increase in the number of children affected by the contagious viral disease in the city. Dr. Racquel So-Sayo, Caloocan’s city health chief, said in an interview that they have already brought immunization services house-to-house to target barangays that have shown low vaccine coverage since early February. Oil spill found off Navotas

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported yesterday that around 500 liters of automotive diesel oil (ADO) was recently found in the waters near Pier 2 of the Navotas Fishport Center. In a statement, the PCG said the Philippine Navy-National Capital Region Command (PN-NCRCOM) Sea Marshal informed them the oil spill was sighted at the Buena Suerte Fishing and Trading Corp. at around 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 24. Typhoid outbreak declared in remote Sarangani village

GENERAL SANTOS CITY – A typhoid outbreak has been declared in four remote sitios (sub-villages) of Barangay (village) Datal Anggas in Alabel town, Sarangani following the death of at least two victims, a local health official said Friday. Doctor Honorato Fabio, Alabel municipal health officer, told reporters that the Department of Health through the Regional Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Manila that four out of the five samples sent out for laboratory testing turned out positive for typhoid. Spain donates P20 million to Sorsogon

MANILA, Philippines - The Spanish government has donated P20 million
to the Philippines to support its pilot project dubbed the Sorsogon
Initiative aimed at eradicating insurgency. The “Sorsogon Initiative” will allow the people in the community to
implement by themselves infrastructure projects as part of the
government’s peace-building effort to achieve peace in the region. Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Luis Arias-Romero said Spain
is fully committed to the peaceful resolution of the long-drawn armed
conflict in the Philippines.

DESPITE earlier assurances from the Overseas Workers Welfare
Administration (OWWA) that there are enough safeguards to prevent the
money of overseas Filipino workers in the agency from being diverted to
the campaign kitty of administration candidates, migrant workers’
advocate Migrante International continued to ask for more guarantees. In
a letter dated last Feb. 21, Migrante International asked OWWA
administrator Carmelita Dimzon to provide them a recent statement of
account on the status of the workers’ fund.

Rainmakers looking for clouds find blue sky

MANILA, Philippines—While rainmakers are having trouble finding clouds to induce rain over northern Luzon, cash
and food-for-work programs are being readied to help 1.3 million poor
families cope with the dry spell, according to the National Disaster
Coordinating Council (NDCC). Social Welfare Secretary Celia Yangco Monday said the Department of
Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) was just awaiting Malacañang’s
go-signal to implement livelihood programs to help the poorest families
as the El Niño phenomenon continued to dry up farmlands and dams across
the country.
