PDEA checks source of Taguig shabu lab's equipment, precursors

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) is tracing the source of the sophisticated equipment and raw materials recovered at the raided shabu laboratory in Taguig City, officials said yesterday. RP lifts DH ban to Switzerland

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino household workers can now work in Switzerland after the government lifted the more than two-decade long suspension of their deployment. Administrator Jennifer Manalili of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said the government decided to lift the ban after the Swiss government put in place necessary regulations to protect foreign workers. 97 more drugs, medical devices subjected to voluntary price cut

MANILA, Philippines - Ninety-seven drugs and medical devices are included in the second batch of products subjected to a voluntary price reduction of up to 50 percent, Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral announced yesterday. In a press briefing, Cabral noted the products come from the 11 pharmaceutical companies that supported the Government-Mediated Access Price (GMAP) or the voluntary price cut in Republic Act 9505 or the Universally Accessible, Cheaper or Quality Medicine Act. DENR probing into Mindoro wildlife hunting advertised on Internet

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Environment and Natural Resources on Friday said it is probing reports of wildlife hunting in Mindoro that is part of an “adventure tour” in the country being advertised on the Internet. DENR Secretary Horacio Ramos said the hunting of wildlife in the country for any purpose is a violation of the law. “Definitely, we will not allow that (hunting) in Mindoro or anywhere in the country,” Ramos said. Deferment of Executive Order on tobacco excise tax sought

MANILA, Philippines - Local officials in tobacco producing provinces asked President Arroyo yesterday to defer implementation of Executive Order 843 giving legislators a big share in the 15 percent local government units (LGUs) are receiving on the excise tax on tobacco products. In a statement, the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) condemned the proposed allocation scheme, describing it as “baseless and utterly lopsided” and done without consultation with LGUs. MANILA, Philippines - State prosecutors have asked Quezon City Judge
Vivencio Baclig to inhibit himself from the rebellion case against
members and supporters of the Ampatuan clan, claiming the trial court
judge is biased against the prosecution. State Prosecutor Lamberto Fabros filed the motion to inhibit Judge
Baclig of Regional Trial Court Branch 77 from the rebellion case last
Friday afternoon, and as a result, yesterday’s scheduled joint hearing
for determination of probable cause and deferment of transfer of the
accused from Mindanao to Metro Manila was suspended.

Appointed gov’t execs running in May must vacate posts, says SC

THE Supreme Court en banc yesterday ordered appointed government
officials seeking elective posts in May 10 to resign immediately so as
not to have undue advantage over their political rivals. Voting
10-5, the SC reversed its Dec. 1, 2009 decision that allowed appointive
officials – who have filed their certificates of candidacy (COCs) – to
remain until President Arroyo terminates their appointments.

GMA mulls increasing emergency funding for El Niño

MANILA, Philippines - President Arroyo is considering increasing
emergency funding for government programs to address the debilitating
effects of El Niño on the country’s food, water and power needs. Deputy presidential spokesman Gary Olivar said Mrs. Arroyo was open
to suggestions of some senators that supplemental funds in the budget
could be used without resorting to emergency powers.
